Cats are by nature very clean animals and they will insist on a clean litter box. There are many easy ways to keep your cat’s litter box clean, and the best way is to have the right litter box. Maybe you are old school and use a low cardboard box for your pet’s litter box. It gets the job done, but it doesn’t hide the odors and the litter can be dragged everywhere by your cat.
You can find a huge variety of options when you are looking for a litter box for your pet. Some are basic trays, usually plastic, the hold litter and are cleaned by dumping everything into the trash. At the other end you will find elaborate litter boxes that are hooded and have automatic cleaners. They cost a lot more, but you really don’t have to do anything except dump old litter and add new.
Basic Disposable Kitty Litter Box
The simplest litter box, besides the always trusty cardboard box, is the disposable kitty litter tray box. This box is made to be thrown away after it is full. It is made from a biodegradable material, you are not throwing away plastic or some other material that will last forever in a landfill. Usually you get 2-3 trays in a pack for around $10. Just add litter and then throw everything away when your cat has used it to capacity. Simple and easy, this is a very basic litter box set up.
Hooded Large Kitty Litter Box
A step up from an open litter box is a hooded or covered litter box. These are designed so that your cat goes into the box, does its business and then comes out of the box. There is a grid by the swinging hatch that is intended to knock off any loose litter from your pet’s paws, helping to keep them from dragging litter all over the house. The main benefit of this system is that the hood helps keep odors from spreading. When it is time to clean the box you simply take the top off and dump the contents in the trash.
Self Cleaning Kitty Litter Box
The most elaborate, and usually the most expensive, litter boxes will be the self cleaning kitty litter boxes. These appliances are automatic and will rotate the litter on a regular basis. The clumps will fall to the bottom tray and you can clean that out by just dumping it in the trash. You save a lot of money on kitty litter with this type of system as you can reuse the litter that hasn’t clumped together with your pet’s waste. Some of the larger units are hooded but most of the smaller ones are open.
Which system is best for your cat? It’s a given that you need a litter box for your cat. Maybe you are one of those rare people who have trained their cat to use a toilet, but most of us have to have a litter box. Cost is always a factor. If you have small children, you may want to look at a hooded system so that your youngster isn’t tempted to sample kitty litter for lunch. If cleaning the box makes you queasy you should definitely look at an automatic cleaning system. Whatever you decide upon, make sure that you keep your cat’s box clean. They will appreciate it very much!
